With Autumn not far away, many in the planner community are thinking about how to refresh their planner from the often vibrant colours of summer to welcome in the cosy, Hygge vibes of the cooler season.

How do you know you need a refresh?

Sometimes you just know. But if you’re unsure here are some sure fire signs that a planner refresh could help you get back on track and organised.

  • You’ve become despondent around your planner. Often not opening it for days or weeks.

  • You’ve started using your phone or a note app to jot down ideas and have lost track of them.

  • You constantly miss key dates like anniversaries, birthdays, insurance deadlines and more.

  • The thought of opening your planner doesn’t make you happy anymore.

If you’ve identified with any of the above, fear not. Below are some tips you can use straight away to fall back in love with your planner and get organised all at the same time.

1. Declutter

In the style of Marie Kondo, firstly remove everything from your planner that doesn’t bring you joy. Get rid of any old receipts, lists or notes that are no longer needed. It’s also good practice to remove any blank tabs or empty inserts that you haven’t been interested to use.

If you have a large sticker, charm or pen collection now is a great time to remove and declutter so that you’re left with as a guideline only 2 pens (one for everyday and one to colour co-ordinate/highlight) and stickers that prove functional and creative like these diamond tracker stickers from Leeshcraft. They can be used to track a range of activities like your period, exercise, meals or these cute plant stickers that serve as a reminder to water your plants.

2. Re-Organise

Once you’ve stripped your planner to the bare minimum, it’s a good time to reorganise your tabs. Re-evaluate those that can be clumped together (e.g food tracking and exercise tracking can be clumped together under Trackers). A great way to figure out what is missing from your planner is to write a list of all the things you want it to hold for you. These can range from a weekly diary to monthly overviews, important dates tracker, goals and bucket lists, to do lists and so on.

Once you have the basic list, try and clump some together so that you are left with 4 - 6 sections max. This will help set up and organise your planner into manageable chunks, allowing you to quickly flip to the section or tab that you need.

3. Decorate

Possibly every planner’s favourite part. This is what bought you to your planner in the first place, the late night scrolling and add to cart buys that keep you excitedly waiting for the postman is the feels we’re trying to achieve here.

Update and refresh your dashboards, quote cards, charms and stickers. Perhaps you want to make it seasonal and swap out the sunflowers for pumpkins. Sometimes, the old colour scheme doesn’t draw you in anymore and it’s all about burgundy and golds going into September and beyond. That’s okay. Follow your heart, what ever pulls a smile from the corner of your lips, makes your heart happy and helps you get through the long to do list quicker, deserves a place in your planner.

But with Christmas not to far off the horizon, it’s not all about splurging on new accessories and inserts. Instead many companies offer planner freebies. Dashboards and journal cards can be downloaded and printed at home for free.
